Chocolate heart peanut butter cookies

Perfect for your little Valentine!

 

This simple recipe is a good way for little bakers to move beyond the semi-homemade concept. This from-scratch recipe gives kids a chance to learn simple measurement techniques.

 

Ingredients:

1/2 c. granulated sugar

1/2 c. packed light brown sugar

1/2 c. shortening

1/2 c. peanut butter

1 large egg

1 1/4 c. all-purpose flour

3/4 tsp. baking soda

1/2 tsp. baking powder

1/4 tsp. salt

Large bag of Dove chocolate hearts, unwrapped

 

Directions:

1. Heat oven to 375 degrees F.

2. Mix sugars, shortening, peanut butter and egg. Stir in flour, baking soda, baking powder and salt.

3. Shape dough into 3/4" balls (or use a 1" cookie scoop). Place 2" apart on ungreased cookie sheet or lined with parchment paper. Bake until set but not hard, about 10 minutes. Push chocolate hearts into center of each cookie right after removing from oven. Cool on wire rack.
