Holiday Wassail

A fragrant Wassail recipe is the perfect way to welcome guests to your home during the holidays. A slow-cooked mulled cider with an enchanting deep and fruity sweetness in a favorite mug is inviting on a chilly evening!

Wassail Source: Lynn Kracht Ingredients: 1 qt. apple cider (4 cups) 1 pt. cranberry juice (2 cups) 1 c. orange juice 3/4 c. lemon juice 1/2 c. granulated sugar 1 tsp. whole allspice 1 tsp. whole cloves 3 cinnamon sticks Directions: 1. Combine all juice in an automatic percolator. 2. Place sugar, allspice, cloves and cinnamon sticks in percolator basket in a coffee filter. 3. Allow coffee pot to go through the perk cycle. Serve hot. Makes 16 1/2 c. servings.

If you don't have a percolator there are a number of recipes for your slow cooker available. The spices can be adjusted to your personal tastes as well. Here's a slow cooker option from the Cooking Channel. Ingredients: 4 c. apple juice 4 c. cranberry juice 4 c. orange juice 1/3 c. honey 2 tsp. whole cloves 3 cinnamon sticks 1 2-inch knob of ginger, peeled and sliced into coins 1 lemon, sliced 1 orange, sliced

Directions: Throw it all on the slow cooker and cook on low for 6-8 hours or high for 3-4 hours. Use a slotted spoon to remove the spices before serving. You can also float some fresh cranberries on the top as a garnish.
